Workshops


Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) is the preferred model used by CHIC to help neighborhood residents and business owners identify and best utilize the assets within a targeted area in an effort to encourage community and economic development. Neighborhoods thrive when all of its stakeholders play an active role in shaping its growth and development. In addition to ABCD, encouraging the knowledge and use and understanding of Community Benefits Agreements (CBA's) are taught by Georgia Stand UP (www.georgiastandup.org)

Community & Civic Participation - This workshop focuses on understanding city, state, and county government and the importance of ongoing participation of community residents. It will allow residents to identify which governmental entities to contact regarding issues within their neighborhood, workshop attendees will be able to determine a range of things any where from who to call for to report a dangerous stray dog or who to contact when a traffic light is not functioning properly.

Community Organizing and Project Planning - This workshops helps participants develop strategies that will help move the community to the next level. Working collectively to help individuals focus on holistic community concerns to incorporate smaller agenda's is a big need for community groups. Many groups get stagnate because of their inability to see and stay focused on the big picture in comparison to smaller and individual agenda's. This can hurt a communities' ability to handle community development opportunities.

Organizational Development for Capacity Building - This workshop begins with the basics of how to properly organize a non profit or for profit organization, understanding the importance of proper understanding of documentation such as bylaws, articles and other incorporating documents as well as effective management of board development activities, fundraising and building "real" and effective collaborative partnerships. These workshops are designed for grass roots organizations and enhances awareness of their role in the community development process.

Basic Grant Writing for Non Profits - This workshop is for new and start up individuals and non profits interested in acquiring basic principles and hands on experience focused on proposal writing to foundations and corporations. Workshop attendees will become familiar with language and industry specific tools that will help them with the completion of a basic request for proposal (RFP). Participants will actually complete the basic components of a proposal.

Non Profit Incorporation - This workshop assists individuals and organizations interested in completing the requirements for obtaining a 501c3 Non Profit Incorporation. This workshop will walk students through the completion of form 1023 and give information and insight on how to successfully obtain non profit status.

Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU) - Basics Unique to any other location in Georgia, the City of Atlanta is organized by Neighborhood Planning Units which provide community engagement and neighborhood based governance for each area of the city. Residents, Businesses and Stakeholders of City of Atlanta Neighborhood will benefit from this series of workshops designed to make the NPU process easy to understand and therefore become a useful tool for community participation.
